The Rare Varieties of Mount Avoca
Rare Varieties, Distinctly Mount Avoca
At Mount Avoca, curiosity has always played a part in what we plant and what we make.
Alongside the better-known varieties of the Pyrenees, the estate is also home to a collection of less familiar grapes, inspired in part by owner Matthew Barry’s travels and his interest in the wines of Europe.
These varieties bring another layer of personality to Mount Avoca, offering something a little different while still reflecting the character of the estate and its certified organic vineyard.
Lagrein
An ancient red variety from Northern Italy, Lagrein is known for its deep colour, dark fruit and savoury character.
At Mount Avoca, it produces a wine with richness and structure, balanced by freshness and fine tannins. Distinctive, generous and a little unexpected.
Tempranillo
Best known as one of Spain’s great red varieties, Tempranillo brings vibrant fruit, spice and an easy savoury edge.
It is a variety that feels immediately approachable, while still offering plenty of depth and character.
Viognier
Aromatic and textural, Viognier is known for its perfume, richness and expressive palate.
Mount Avoca’s take on the variety balances fragrance with freshness, creating a white wine with generosity, texture and plenty of personality.
Cabernet Franc
Elegant, perfumed and finely structured, Cabernet Franc offers a more restrained expression of red wine.
With lifted aromatics, savoury detail and fine tannins, it brings a different dimension to the Mount Avoca range.

Together, these varieties reflect the sense of exploration that sits at the heart of Mount Avoca.
Different origins.
Different personalities.
All grown and made with the same meticulous attention to detail.
For those looking to go beyond the familiar, these are wines well worth discovering.
