A rare treat following on from the 1989, 1999 and 2000 late harvest wines - scrumptious!

Colour

Bright straw gold with a rose-gold shimmer.

Nose

Classic apricot and quince aromas with a lovely Turkish-delight, rose-petal perfume.

Tasting Notes

Fresh apricot and quince paste aromas weave across Turkish delight and sweet peach and is balanced with a long line of crisp acidity that gives the wine its impeccably clean lemon sherbet finish.

Winemaking

Budburst happened on time in mid-September 2022. The winter had been wet and mild with moderate to good rainfall then major floods on the 6th and 13th October resulted in saturated conditions that made management extremely challenging. Summer conditions proved to be considerably warmer than the last three years as the effects of La Niña eventually subsided. Normal cooler autumn conditions prevailed resulting in a high-quality vintage from varieties that survived the spring floods.

Our very tiny crop of Viognier was left to hang on the vine until 18 May 2023.  A small amount of botrytis - "Noble rot" was present which added to the complexity and intensity.  The block was heavily fortified with nets to deter very interested birds!

After cold-settling for a week, specialist yeast strains were used to accentuate the already abundant aromas and intensify the fruit flavours.   The result is intense and clean but with less than 100 dozen (375ml bottles) made this wine is exclusive to our online store and cellar door.

Food Matching

In Europe it would be enjoyed as an aperitif.  A perfect match for blue and mature cheeses as it complements the power and tang perfectly.  Also delightful with soft cheeses or your favourite dessert. Our winemaker suggests: a soft creamy Blue or apple strudel with mascarpone.

Cellaring

Divine now, or cellar if you can and enjoy how it develops over the next 10+ years.

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit - 93 points “This is instantly appealing with dried apricot, honey, marmalade and warm spice aromas. The palate offers ripe fruit intensity together with fleshy texture and lovely sweetness, finishing lingering and refreshing.” At its best: now to 2029
