Back Block Shiraz
Originally developed to help local growers with excess fruit over 15 years ago, Back Block has developed into a "reserve" style wine. Always sourced from the very best local vineyards and often blended with a percentage of Mount Avoca Estate wine, it is now a sourced from an ACO certified organic vineyard - this single vineyard Shiraz is grown on vines running north-south so is bigger more robust style than the Mount Avoca vineyard that runs east-west. A wonderful example of how wines really are made in the vineyard.
Probably the best Back Black to date, the 2022 is a beautiful full-bodied Shiraz in a traditional Australian style with loads of colour and flavour and firm juicy tannins, delightful layers of plum and raspberry with classic Shiraz pepper and dusty powdery tannins that linger in the tradition of a classic big-hitting Shiraz in a velvet glove.
COLOUR
Dark red, intense opaque with a bright lustre.
NOSE
Aromas of blackberry jam, just picked black currants and Doris plum, with a subtle roasted coffee and a cracked black pepper overlay.
PALATE
Fresh, full bodied flavours of blackberry, sweet vanilla cherry, cocoa and toasted hazelnut wrapping around the fine supple tannins from small barrel aging. Plush and rich with lovely intensity balanced by a long clean finish with undertones of raspberry coulis, freshly ground black pepper and toasty oak.
WINEMAKING
Harvested in the morning, the grapes were picked at optimal ripeness, crushed into stainless steel fermenters for MLF fermentation. The wine was matured with French and American Oak for 18 months. It was fined and filtered before being bottled.
FOOD PAIRING
Rich vegetable soup or minestrone or gnocchi followed by roast lamb with seasonal vegetables, Beef Bourguignon or Osso Bucco, served with polenta, wood-fired sweet potatoes and a selection of grilled or roasted vegetables.

Delivery & Shipping Details
Mount Avoca uses Australia Post to ensure a reliable and efficient delivery service to every location across Australia. If you are not at home to accept your delivery, they may leave your wine in a safe place or leave a card for collection from your nearest post office. The more detail you provide in 'delivery instructions' the more likely a seamless delivery.

Cellar door pick up
If you are nearby or driving past, feel free to click "cellar door pick-up" and we will have your wine ready for pick up.
FREE storage
If you need to cellar your wine but lack the space, Mount Avoca has recently launched a free storage service in our temperature controlled cellar.
Pricing & Delivery Costs
Pick, pack and freight costs have risen dramatically over the last few years and we work hard to keep the costs reasonable and these costs are partially subsidised by us. Order over $350 in any one order to enjoy FREE freight or once you reach that amount in any 12 month period all future orders are deliverd freight free.
Delivery Times
Please allow 3–5 working days for delivery to capital cities and 1–2 weeks for regional areas and interstate, though we've noticed that delivery times have taken longer since Covid 19 came and went. Customer service is important to us; if we foresee a problem with your delivery we will contact you to discuss it. The above times are guidelines only and may be faster or slower depending on your location.
Please contact us via our online message app if you have a delivery deadline.
Requirements
- Please include clear delivery instructions and a telephone number on all orders.
- Wine damaged in transit will be returned to Mount Avoca (which can take 4 to 6 weeks) and we will contact you to make alternative arrangements. Sometimes we are unaware of this, so please get in touch if your wine hasn't arrived after a week or two.
- Undeliverable wine will be returned to Mount Avoca and we will contact you to make alternative arrangements. Undeliverable wine will incur an administration fee of $30 for re-shipping.
- As we have no control over shipping Mount Avoca takes no responsibility for the delivery times or loss of orders. However, your satisfaction is paramount so we will always work hard to ensure you wine is delivered promptly.
