Matthew was brought up with a “clean and green” ethos as his father was a pioneer in the Ausvit minimal spray program in the 1980- with an old school phone line trenched all the way into the vineyard to a weather station for Dept of Agriculture data. Using native Australian insects to attack caterpillars in the1990s, other natural pesticides and no fungicides most years, moving to organic was a natural step.
After an international wine tasting of organic and biodynamic wines where the vitality and pep made this wine stand apart from the majority of wines on the market Mount Avoca followed the road less travelled to treat the vineyard like a garden in pursuit of that elusive purity of flavour and vivaciousness. The search for quality led to a completely natural chemical-free philosophy. The organic certification is really a by-product of growing the best quality fruit, so in a way we are accidentally organic. “Our holy grail was always totally amazing wines with a purity of flavour and no chemical residues at all– the certification was a happy side-effect” - Matthew Barry - Owner.
Celebrating 50 years, Mount Avoca began with the dream of a Melbourne stockbroker who wanted a tree change 30 years before the term had been coined.
Located just outside the historic Gold Rush town of Avoca, the wine capital of the Australian Pyrenees is renowned for its understated quality. With a thriving wine shop and vineyards in the late 1800s the region is one of the oldest wine regions in the country.
The 400 acre property off Moates Lane was purchased and the first vines were planted in 1970. Over the next decades the vineyard was expanded and 1000 olive trees were planted of which 600 remain.
Second generation owner and winemaker, Matthew Barry has continued the environmental ethos and practice instigated by his father, achieving Australian Organic Classification in both the vineyard and the winery. Three stunning eco-luxe environmentally aware lodges opened in 2009 providing the perfect place to just hang out, unwind and bask in the peaceful and largely untouched Pyrenees,
Founded in 1970 by John and Arda Barry, Matthew Barry and sons are now carrying on the family tradition. Dedicated to self-sustaining environmental principles since its establishment, Mount Avoca is now the only organic certified vineyard and winery in the region and one of the leaders in combining organic and sustainable viticulture in a modern framework as well as innovation with traditional quality winemaking.

David Darlow brings his history as a wine retailer in the UK, chef extraordinaire, 19 years of winemaking in both Europe, the US and across Australia to add the broad brush-strokes to his mastery of detail in all aspects of viticulture and winemaking. Humble and unassuming, a quiet fire burns inside David to produce wines that reflect the best possible result from the earth, sun and occasional rain that is humanly possible.
The number of gold medals, trophies, Wine of the Year awards and nominations awards won in the short time David has been at the helm really says it all.
